The Telegraph – England eased to a four-wicket win over Australia to take a 2-0 series lead as the gulf between the sides in one-day cricket was again exposed at the Gabba.

Summary

  • England eased to a four-wicket win over Australia to take a 2-0 series lead as the gulf between the sides in one-day cricket was again exposed at the Gabba.
  • England can win the series in Sydney on Sunday and will be bursting with confidence after winning only their second ever ODI against Australia in Brisbane and their first for 19 years.
  • England have out batted and outbowled Australia in the first two games, and this result was closer than it looked only because of Mitchell Starc, a great bowler capable of rescuing any situation, struck some late blows but unlike the Ashes series, his side did not have the pace bowling to depth to back him up.
  • This was not a vintage performance from Eoin Morgan’s side with the bat and if Starc had removed Joe Root it could have been a different result, but England also bat all the way down and have the confidence of success behind them.
  • Australia’s total was below par but a team with Starc leading its attack can win from anywhere and his four for 69, including two wickets in his last over, made England work hard for their victory.
